The Metrovia bus rapid transit system, which opened its first 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) in 2007, clinched the 2007 STA award for Guayaquil, Ecuador. The new bus system provides cleaner, higher quality service and reduced trip times in key travel corridors for city residents. Also, the refurbishment of previously deteriorated public spaces, including Guayaquil’s waterfront and Santa Ana district, encourages pedestrian use and initiated an important part of the city’s resurgence.
